About the Event

Introduction

Early consoles like Atari, Commodore, and Acorn laid the foundation for the modern gaming industry, pioneering concepts in gameplay, graphics, and user interaction. There innovations sparked a global gaming culture, influencing the development of today’s advanced platforms and game design. On display will be a host of vintage machines, historic, innovative games, and demonstrations of 3D design.

More on the event lead

Sam blends gaming nostalgia, tech know-how, and a creative mind for Mindcraft to shape his future in gaming and technology. Sam will be showing his Minecraft server he built during the pandemic as a means to train his work colleagues in a virtual world, the first of its kind.

James is a writer and journalist covering technology, politics and policy.  James will lead a talk on game-changing AI futures - see Game Changing AI Future.

Danny is a 3D designer trained lover of learning about how things work and has been a CoderDojo volunteer since 2018. Chronically bad at games but has a soft spot for Tetris and Dr. Mario.  Danny will show off his 3D design work, and demonstrate some easy-to-learn tools and techniques in 3D modelling and animation, using Blender and simple TinkerCAD (Computer Assisted Design) programs.

Mark is a local nerd who loves to collect and tinker with vintage computers, and has absolutely no idea how to write a line of code.

Game Changing AI Future

Join technology journalist James O'Malley as he explains how the gaming technology of yesteryear laid the groundwork for the amazing AI innovations we see today. He'll then look to the future at how AI could change our world and why we should be more optimistic than many people think about how it can improve the world.

“Agree or disagree, O’Malley is such an interesting, thoughtful, lucid writer, that exploring his ideas on any subject is a pleasure. Very much worth your time.”- Ian Dunt

“There are few people whose writing I enjoy more”- Hannah Fry

“James O’Malley’s Odds and Ends of History is good for niche, nerdy politics.” - Helen Lewis
